SLIP_*
Package put together by John Mudge
FidoNet: 1:352/111 SurvNet: 9:91/0
==========================================================================
Overview:
This is a combination of several programs available through other sources,
with some of the programs being shareware. Please read the doc files and
register as appropriate.
PHONE and UMSLIP are from the University of Minnesota. The other programs
are from various sources as indicated in their DOC files.
This package contains everything you need to set up a SLIP (Serial Line
Interface Protocol) connection to Internet. SLIP varies from an Internet
Shell Account in that the connection is made automatically and you are
issued a temporary IP (Internet Protocol) address for the duration of your
call. This is done through a handshake procedure known as BOOTP, which
passes certain information between your system and your host.
Installation:
Make a directory on your C: drive called SLIP:
CD \
MD SLIP
Make a subdirectory under \SLIP:
CD \SLIP
MD MAIL
Copy all programs from wherever they are to the SLIP directory:
CD \SLIP
XCOPY C:\wherever *.*
Add two lines to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
SET TZ=PST8PDT
(or whatever is appropriate for your timezone.)
C:\SLIP\UMSLIP.COM 0x60 2048
Reboot your machine.
Run PHONE SETUP
CD \SLIP
PHONE SETUP
Press ALT-S and set up your modem and slip info. You will need to contact
your Internet provider to get some of the info. See further instructions
below for exact setup details.
***********
Modify the script PHONE.CMD for your modem and the custom login portion.
***********
Running the included batch file will automatically call your provider at
the number set up in PHONE and use the login script PHONE.CMD. After the
connection is complete, you will be placed in the application that is
included with this archive.
All uploading and downloading will be done from or to your machine rather
than your host machine!

Parity, Stop Bits, Handshaking and Dialing can be left as they are.
If you have successfully connected using some other package, you should be
able to find the appropriate settings for Baud rate, COM Ports, Modem and
Init str from your existing setup. If not, or you aren't sure, do the
following:
Baud rate: If you have a 14400 or faster modem and a buffered UART (16550),
select 57600. If you aren't sure whether you have a 16550, try
38400 first. Then try 57600. If things go faster, keep that
setting; if they go slower or more jerkily, go back to 38400.
If you are running with a locked serial port, set this option
to the locked rate.
COM Ports: Select the COM port that your modem is attached or set to.
Modem: Scroll through the list and select the most appropriate modem.
If your modem isn't listed, and you know what your initialisation
string should be, select 'GENERIC' and enter the string, without
the preceeding 'AT', in the Init str box, e.g. you know that
your modem works well with just 'ATZ', so you just type Z in the
Init str box. If you aren't sure what your init string should be,
try 'GENERIC' and Z or 'HAYES-OPTIMA'.
Select OK and you will be returned to the start-up screen. Press F5 and the
following screen will be presented to you:
